Nature and Wildlife
Sri Lanka is an island with inexplicable beauty in its every corner, rich in History and is filled with exotic charm. The Sri Lankan highlands improve the country’s richly-varied landscape. Only a few hours away from the coast, here is a land of plunging ravines, rushing waterfalls and tea estates clinging insecurely to steep hillsides. The highlands provide an excellent walking country and a natural setting for activity holidays. It is much cooler here which can be a welcome contrast to the heat of Colombo and the coast. Hotels are likely to be simpler, perhaps enlightening a taste of old-style Sri Lanka.
For one small island Sri Lanka packs a huge variety of wildlife. This is mainly due to that small space which has wide range of altitude. The central highlands rise to over 2500 m with moist evergreen forests, high rainfall and uplands. Within 100km there are sandy beaches and dry coastal plains.
Kandy-Udawatta Kale is considered to be one of the greatest locations for some great wildlife and exceptional birds. Sinharaja rain forest is one of the most different natural rain forests of Sri Lanka. It was declared as a world heritage by UNESCO in the year 1990. It comprises the most beautiful fauna and flora and attracts nature lovers from all over the world.
Kitugala Kaleni River is another natural environment and adventure spot. You can relax deeply by just listening the sound of water flowing by in this great tourist spot. Bird watching, water rafting and other adventure sports can be undertaken here. Nuwara Eliya is a well-known hill resort and comprises the famous shrubs of tea. This place is also famous for its Georgian style artifacts and buildings.
Nearer to the city of Colombo is Bellawilla a small but beautiful sanctuary of birds. From here you can go to the nearby beaches quickly. Muturajawela is another sanctuary of birds and ecology. Yala is the biggest park in Sri Lanka and home for the wild buffalo, biggest mammals, deer and bear. Sri Lankan jungle fowl and peacock can also be seen there. Uda Walawe is Sri Lanka’s most well-known elephant part.
On the way to north, the peacefulness of Habarana city can be enjoyed by you which are also considered to be the centre of attraction for bird and nature lovers. Thus, the wildlife and nature of Sri Lanka is very unique and provide an amazing experience to its tourists.
