Sri Lanka Adventure Tours
The geographical diversity of Sri Lanka is the key factor that promotes the adventure tours. Everyone knows that an adventure tour consists of activities such as Hiking and trekking, canoeing and Kayaking, White water rafting , Mountain biking, rock climbing, diving wind surfing, paragliding, banana boating , ballooning and even cycling.
Canoeing: The abundance of reservoirs, lagoons and rivers that run swiftly down to meet the sea are a perfect venue for canoeing. The River Kalu Ganga originates from the central hills and twines its way to the town of Kalutara on the west coast of Sri Lanka.
This river is the perfect venue for canoeing. The reservoir in the Sabaragamuwa province known as Samanalawewa reservoir has hotels form where the canoes and kayaks can be got on rent. One can even get a guide on request.
Whitewater Rafting: Whitewater rafting involves descending a stream as it drops over boulders and waterfalls which are usually 700 feet high. These sorts of waterfalls are suitable for whitewater rafting.
The Kelani River offers this kind of venue. Kitulgala which is beside the river Kelani and situated southwest of Kandy is considered the birthplace of this sport in Sri Lanka. Kitulgala is 80km away from Colombo. This place is very famous for whitewater rafting.
Hiking and Trekking: There are many places for people who are adventurous and want to go for trekking or hiking and explore the island. There are place for this even close to Colombo. Gampaha is a small town near Colombo that offers easy hike. One can view farms and tin hamlets while hiking here. The Knucles Range is a challenge to the hikers. It just rises to 1863m above the Dumbara valley. One can also visit the Wasgamuwa National Park, Veddah Territory called as Dambana in Mahiyangana , Alugallena Montane Forest Nature Trail and the Dekinda Stream Nature Trail.
The path from Belihul-oya to Horton plains is wonderful for trekking because it rises 2134m above sea level. The old path from Sigiriya to Minneriya is also good for trekking.
Rock Climbing: One of the toughest adventures is rock climbing because not only is it challenging but one has to maintain a very high degree of physical fitness for this sport.
The spots to practice this sport are the Knucles Mountain Range, Ella Adventure Park, Habarana, Buttala, Belihul-Oya, Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, and Horton. Knucles Mountain Range offers the rock climbers a very rugged terrain and gives them a tough time. Belihul-Oya is approximately 160 km form Colombo.
